Sky Harbor
In 1969, Arby Alper established a new general aviation airport in the Las Vegas Valley, south of the area's primary population center. The airport served general aviation and corporate travelers, as well as several airlines offering Grand Canyon sightseeing tours. Through steady growth, Sky Harbor remained a small but active airport throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Alper continued to invest in the airport by constructing new hangars and adding services to support the growing aviation industry in the valley, including aircraft rebuilding and restoration. Its location away from heavily populated areas made Sky Harbor a popular destination for private pilots and general aviation enthusiasts.
Clark County Department of Aviation
In 1996, the Clark County Department of Aviation purchased Sky Harbor as part of its ongoing efforts to address the future aviation needs of Southern Nevada and its rapidly growing population. At the time of the purchase, the airport featured a single 5,000-foot runway, a terminal building with a control tower, several large hangars, 10 T-hangars, and a handful of trailers. Following the acquisition, the airport was renamed Henderson Executive Airport, and plans for its expansion began.
Henderson Executive Airport expansion
To accommodate the growing demand for aviation facilities and services in Southern Nevada, the Clark County Department of Aviation invested more than $30 million in Henderson Executive Airport to develop a premier business aviation facility and provide an attractive, convenient and economical alternative to Harry Reid International Airport.
Several major projects have been completed, including:
The construction of two parallel runways, the longest measuring 6,501 feet.
A stand-alone air traffic control tower was constructed in 2006, replacing the original control tower built in the 1940s and was salvaged from Nellis Air Force Base in 1974.
Installation of substantial utility infrastructure, including a new maintenance building.
Development of 15 acres of aircraft parking ramp with new storage hangars accommodating 95 private aircraft.
A beautifully appointed terminal building opened on June 13, 2006, providing a seamless transition between aircraft and ground transportation.
In May 2020, All In Aviation and maintenance partner, Lone Mountain Aviation, opened Double Down Aviation, a multi-use aviation complex offering aircraft hangar space, maintenance services, pilot supplies, flight training, and aircraft rental.
The Ribeiro Companies' Quail Air Center has expanded its hangar properties at Henderson Executive Airport with 14 additional hangar accommodations for privately owned aircraft.
The facilities at HND are designed to meet the needs of discerning general aviation pilots and corporate clientele. As a primary reliever airport for busy Harry Reid International Airport, HND offers the services and amenities needed to make every visit pleasant, convenient, and efficient.
With 84 acres of aircraft parking ramp, HND offers the space, infrastructure, and runway capacity to accommodate virtually all types of general aviation aircraft. Its convenient location and extensive facilities provide an attractive option for pilots and passengers seeking efficiency, convenience, and value.
